Cybercriminals cleanout cryptocurrency using sim card swap scam

I am posting this news article we liked with a word of caution. This article is a bit sensationalized and written in a way to inspire fear in an already untrusting and not completely knowledgeable crypto community. Most of todays crypto community consists of “newbies” to one extent or another, who love the idea of crypto and its potential benefits. Don’t let these stories dissuade you from learning all you can about crypto and enjoying some investment and interaction. In this article it was said that there was nothing which could be done to recover the money, but in fact the phone carrier that gave changed the victims phone settings giving access to the criminals is liable.  Simply stated, the phone carrier should be sued for the damages since they incorrectly gave the criminals access to copy the victims phone. The big takeaway from this should be use common sense, never give anyone your private keys or seed phrase, if you keep crypto exchanges or wallets on your phone make a strong password for your phone with limited tries, never sign into an exchange or wallet through email link, be careful to make sure the URL in the browser is correct- scammers built elaborate websites that look real with misspelled URL’s that fool even the veteran crypto pros who aren’t paying attention, set up and learn to be comfortable with a 2FA app like Google authenticator, keep your email safe with a strong password changed regularly, never conduct crypto business or check balances on a public network, call your cell phone provider and set up strong security to prevent a sim swap. If you are using a new crypto tool, research security for that tool and see what others have had to deal with and what to watch out for. Never leave large amounts of money on exchanges, as well as in a hot wallet without a hardware wallet attached to protect you.
